Dennis Wilson wrote it but gave it away to Billy Preston as a gift. That's why, after Joe Cocker had a hit with his cover, Dennis "reclaimed" it by singing it at many Beach Boys concerts in the late '70's and early '80's.

By the way, Otis Redding NEVER recorded it. He died in 1968, long before the song was written!

Both of you guys are wrong. The song was actually written by Beach Boy drummer Dennis Wilson. While at a party, Dennis and Billy Preston came up with the lyrics. Wilson penned the melody on the piano. Preston took it as his own and Wilson, more interested in drugs and alcohol never pressed the issue. He died a few years later

Didn't Otis Redding record that song also? I think he sang it before Joe Cocker...I love both vrsions, just wonderin' who sang it first.

"You Are So Beautiful" is a song written by Billy Preston and Bruce Fisher. It was first recorded by Preston and made popular in a version by Joe Cocker.
