Who wrote the song "On the Other Hand" sung by Randy Travis. I keep thinking someone sang it before Randy did.

a group by the name of LEGEND did a version in the early 80's...i remember playing the 45 at my mothers parties..a great rendition..i think better than randy Travis version...but for the life of me i cannot find legend, the band anywhere on the net ???

Old memories

In 1982-1983 I played guitar and bass on 3 different versions of a demo song called "On the Other Hand". It was written by a man named Steve Taft. Soon after, we both moved away from the area and I haven't talked to him since. But when I heard the Randy Travis song I started to wonder if it was "inspired" by Steve's song. I know it was heard by producers and other songwriters in Nashville.

I don't think anyone else recorded it. I know that it was offered to George Jones but he turned it down. It was written by Paul Overstreet and Don Schlitz. Randy released it in 1985 but it didn't go very far the first time. After 1982 became a top 10 hit they re-released On the Other Hand in 1986 and it went straight to the top.
