This story was very interesting, but not so sure it is all true and correct. There were TWO Tommy Dorsey's.

Tommy Dorsey - (1905 to 1956) Big Band Leader

and

Rev. Tommy A. Dorsey - (1899 to 1993) known as the Father of Gospel Music

Both well known, however only one was a composer of some of the most famous gospel songs ever written, heard or sung.

I just received an e-mail from a friend about the authorship of "Precious Lord". It's amazing how fast mis-information travels. It is being credited to Tommy Dorsey, the band leader and not the Reverend Thomas A. Dorsey. We need to question again people, and not just accept as 'gospel' what some would have us believe.

Thomas Dorsey wrote this song in Chicago, Illinois, after his wife Nettie died while giving birth to a child. The child also died shortly after.

Precious Lord was written in 1932.

Earlier in Dorsey's life he was a leading blues pianist known as Georgia Tom.

Dorsey was the music director at Pilgrim Baptist Church in Chicago from 1932 until the late 1970s.
