Untitled (Not You) Lyrics Critique - Christian

by Becky
(Macomb, IL USA)

“Your tears, hold them back”,
“Don’t cry”, “Don’t act like that”,
“Your pain, I don’t see what you’re talking about”,

When it comes to looking back, that’s what you think,
Those words, are what you see,
So tell them, tell them,

Chorus:
“Take these back, these are yours,
No one is gonna tell me what to do,
And the only thing I know, the only thing I’ve held onto, My only Source of Hope,
It comes from God, not you.”

“Pretty picture, Perfect outside, No spot to be seen”,
That’s what everybody thinks,
But everybody seems to know nothing, it’s enough to make you go insane,
“Why can’t they see the mess, the haunting stain?”,

When it comes to looking back, that’s what you think,
Those words are, what you see,
So tell them, tell them,
Chorus:
“Take these back, these are yours,
No one is gonna tell me what to do,
And the only thing I know, the only thing I’ve held onto, My only Source of Hope,
It comes from God, not you.”

How dangerous the hurt inside, the bundling of fear,
Rolling down that so slick slope, that brought you here,
Freeze the frame now, make all your thoughts clear,
Let God make it all disappear,

Let Him take them back, Let Him show whose they are,
And let Him tell you what to do,
‘Cuz He’s the only One you know,
He’s your only Source of Hope
It comes from Him, not you.

Really like "Not You". It fits.
by: wyllyness

I'm a Christian. Really love Christian music so was hoping to find a Christian song to critique as I hope to post my own song soon.

First off, if this is about you, I'm sorry for what you had to go through. :( But in light of me just saying that, I think that your pain comes thru in the lyrics, which is the way it should be. :)

Very good rhyming, beautiful poetry. It would be helpful to know what type of christian music... contemporary? country? pop? etc? how do you hear the music to it, if any? guitar? band? piano? is there a rise and fall from the verses to the chorus or is it all slow?

The only things I'm not super fond of is the difficulty I had in trying to figure out a lot about it. I had to re-read it a few times to figure out "Take what back?" and then, "Who takes the words back?" Then I figured that out too, but it took me several rounds of reading to figure it all out. I may be a little dense... it is 2:30 am after all. But you may have to get some people to listen a few times before they're absolutely sold if they can't figure it out.

That said, I appreciate great writing when it doesn't just yell the exact meaning of things at you... writing that makes you think.

i know... big help, huh?
Those are my only comments! Great work!
