Untitled lyrics critique -- pop/rock

by Joe
(Livonia, MI, USA)

Well, I'm a complete novice when it comes to writing lyrics, so feedback is really important to me. There is a story to this song, but I've tried not to be completely straightforward with it. Please feel free to offer advice/suggest changes, and, by all means--be picky! Especially in regards to the logical progression of the song.

Verse 1:

Midnight, goodnight, I stagger in
You smell my breath, I reek of gin
I'm back from my own happy hour
But I can't save my soul with flowers

We share a smile as friends depart
A happy time, a heavy heart
I make it halfway to my room
It's solitude that breeds my doom

Chorus:

They lied, seems we've been fooled again
They told me Jesus was my friend
We lost the battle, lost the war
We know it's not worth dying for

Verse 2:

Time spent with you seems to bewitch
I feel around for the light switch
I trip, I fall, I hit my head
I crawl into my empty bed

I lie here in this empty place
The truth that you're afraid to face
is raining on me from above
I've thrown away your precious love

(Chorus)

Verse 3:

You can't have me, you're too naive
My heart your hellfire does aggrieve
There's nothing here but what you see
The loaves, the fish, the wine, and me

I'd bet my soul that I was right
I get back up, turn on the light
No more to live in pain and fear
Can't wait to hear the sinners cheer

(Chorus)
