this is iiklipz, and these are my tips, techniques, and procedures

by Terry McCann
(Embarrass, MN)

I started writing hip-hop when I was 14 years old, though before was raised to hate hip-hop and rap.. but when I heard my first hip-hop song I instantly connected with it and wondered why so many people hate it.. I decided to change my own views on the genre, by bringing myself into it. I must say obviously, that you have to connect with your certain genre... One that fits you. listen to other types of music and you might find the pavement to make your road with.. when I first started writing lyrics, I totally sucked and did the old 2 points in the garbage hoop. I listened to artists and analyzed their styles, and I found 3 MCs that totally stuck out at me and quickly became my favorites and I was inspired as well as compelled after hearing: Redman, Busta rhymes, and Atmosphere.. three completely different styles, but they all had fun with their rhymes.. If you spend your time writing songs with no humor, excitement, or thoughtfulness, you'll get bored of your songs just as fast as anyone else.. I'm writing a golden song called get wastified, a funny song filled with awesome.. and also something I have experience in.. speaking of experience, the more you write, the more natural it becomes.. 4 years of writing on my end and I still surprise myself and others with lyrics and hope to improve further.. a tip for you (if you write hip-hop) is never to think TOO HARD.. you can't sit down and say you're gonna write the next hit... it didn't work on tenacious D and the pick of destiny and it definetely won't work in real life.. another thing to do is write your lyrics THEN your title.. and keep practicing, you WILL improve. keep it unique, and awesome, I know you can and so do you dude, so good luck on whatever you write, whether hip-hop or not.

Stay realistic.
by: Anonymous

What I got out of this is to stay realistic. I agree that you can't compose songs thinking you have to write lyrics that will make you famous. Like someone said in another post, most of a band's or musician's fame is simply by reputation or 'social proof' if you will. There are a lot of bands that put out complete **** for albums, but retain their fame and money anyway. Just write to have fun, and build your music career slowly. Keep your day job. And know that no matter what lyrics you write or how fantastic they are, there will always be people (most likely a majority) who won't like your music. Write for a niche, for someone like you.

Good tips
by: Anonymous

Hey, I'm glad to see you're an Atmosphere fan. Someone that I feel is completely inline with what you're saying, as he really drifted out of the mainstream rap cycle and made raps which are intelligent and sophisticated.

You're spot on though. One thing I always say is to be happy with the means and never worry about the ends. Meaning, have fun playing, just do your thing, produce demos, share your music, and you never know if/when you'll find an audience. What I mean by the ends is to not worry about playing shows or writing particular songs you just feel you SHOULD be writing. If it's not coming to you naturally and requires hard pressed thinking then chances are you shouldn't be writing it, maybe it'll come at a later time.

The latter applies to shows as well, everything will come together. It's important to not overwhelm yourself and simply go with the flow.
