The Basic Steps 4 Songwriting

by Kayla Smith
(New York)

Songwriting is very simple. It's just a story with a melody. If your new to songwriting, use a familar story and sing it as if it was your own song. Maybe it will give you some ideas. Usually songs are about a breakup, a battle in life, or even about being a singer. They can be about a lot of things so choose wisely. First off, having a good singing voice is always good. Who would want to hear a singer that sounds like nails on a chalkboard? I wouldn't. And don't be afriad to go over and over the song and change the words. Songwriters do it all the time. Second, make sure that people can connect to it. Write a song that is familar to you and other people because maybe they will understand it more if they have been through it. Look at all of your favourite singers. What do they write about? Taylor Swift mostly writes about love songs. Most artists do. And Hannah Montana writes about a lot of stuff. You always want to mix up your songs and not always have the same storyline for all of them.
