Songwriting and Drugs

by Steve V.
(Brooklyn, New York)

Does anyone here think that doing drugs can help you write good songs? Especially if it's a party/dance song. I mean, when people are out at a party dancing to hit songs, they are under the influence of drugs. Wouldn't it be a good idea to put myself in their frame of mind when writing?

I have a few friends that occasionally do acid and coke and said that it helps their songwriting. I'm curious to try it, but I don't want to feel like I need drugs to write a good song. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Drugs?
Are you nutz
Maybe they'll help for the short term
but worry about your future
the drugs will cause too much damage to you're body and destroy you're creativity in the long run.
Just look at Ozzy he did so many drugs he pisses himself everytime he's on stage. He gets soaked before he goes out on stage so that noone can see him wet himself.

Songwriting from the Heart
by: Anonymous

You shouldn't need anything like drugs to write songs. Song writing should come from the heart. Usually, I find I need an idea of somesort, like a picture or good drawing, then create imagery on the idea(s) I am working with. I am a songwriter, writing my fourth song right now; do not have a band at the moment, nor any demo tapes produced.

Sometimes
by: Anonymous

Sometimes I find drugs can mellow me out and really clear my mind, and make the feelings and images easier to work into words, I'd say if the drug is a downer than it could help. But if you have no experience or creative ability (not a whole lot of humans in this category) than drugs aren't going to magically produce songs for you.

Drugs are just a way of creating a different state
by: Rob Boucher

Drugs are just a way of creating a different emotional or physchological state. That can help or hurt your song writing. It depends. It can make you look at things differently than you might of.

But there are other less dangerous or expensive ways to change your state. Travel, reading, doing something scary, doing something new, being quiet with yourself.

I actually don't do drugs to do song writing myself. I don't want my art to be dependent on them. I just look for new input that I haven't found before.

If it's already in you...
by: Encyke

If the talent is already in you, it may be inhibited or enhanced, however one or the other will probably happen if the drugs used are addictive... you will either totally lose focus of what you wanted to do, not noticing that either the years are passing and you rarely spend the time to write because addictive drugs will consume every facet of your life... or... you will write some of the best (albeit depressing or somber) music of your life as a creative reaction to going through the most painful thing you will ever go through.

"Hey, Wait, I've got a new complaint... Forever in debt to your priceless advice." Kurt Cobain, who some believe killed himself to escape addiction...
