I have found it to be very useful when writing song lyrics to choose a topic that almost everyone can relate to. Take "love" for instance. Everyone in the world has had some experience with this topic. Whether it be that they have lost it, felt it, looking for it,never felt it, or happen to be in love at the time. As a matter of fact, if you could possibly write a song that would cover all of those things it would probably be a hit. I have produced more attraction by using this method than any other I've tried. Good luck!

You can only write about what you know.

Music is all about emotions. What invokes the biggest emotions in your life? Write about that. It doesn't matter whether the emotions are good or bad. You can write about joy, sadness, fear, anger pity, etc. It can be a person, a place, an activity, a hobby, a passion an issue, anything.

What works for one may not work for another since your song has to come from YOU. It's all about what you are feeling.

Whatever brings out your deepest emotions are the best song topics to write about.

personally I like to rap/sing about topics that are rarely discussed these days like the environment, suicide, alien visitations and abductions, etc

you can right about anything you want to. whether its a personal song or not it's your voice and every song is meant to be heard. you could write a song about anything, for example: a song about dreaming of the first time you ever met someone special. anything, just be true to you :)
