Simple is good

Sometimes we think that our audiences want to "wowed" or impressed by our complexity of song structure. We feel the need to use a weird range of chord progression to sound "unique". But lets admit it. Lots of effort will be going in and you may lose track of your focus.
Sometimes we should go back to our roots. It could be a gospel song, it could be a screamo song. Does not matter, and write what we like. Use simple chords or melody. The focus should be that the song is easy for the audience to catch and hard enough to keep you awake.
For example, "that thing you do" was a great song. But was it a very complex song? not really. But its fun to listen to and crowds go wild if you perform it anywhere. So although its tempting to create a complex masterpiece, remember your audiences.
