Putting all the parts together - Songwriting

I am a pretty good guitar player but a fairly remedial songwriter. I have a whole warchest (metal of several varieties mostly) of riffs and hooks and all that junk but I seem to be having problems constructing a functional song. You could liken it to having a hundred perfectly functional lego blocks but having no idea how to make what your trying to build. I guess I could say I'm having trouble finding the riffs and parts that fit together, most of the combinations I've tried sound sort of schizophrenic (in my mind at least)

Anyone have a similar problem or some advice?

Too Many "Parts"

My advice would be to just take one really good riff or bit, and try to write something around that. Figure out what key would work for it, find all of the chords in that key and keep it simple. Start strumming some of the chords and humming something on top of it. Don't be afraid to let it go all over the place until you find something, just like you do when you're noodling on your guitar. That's how it happens!
