Protection of songs

by HBeeler
(Virginia)

My husband and I are singer-songwriters. We don't perform in public, only at home. But how can we protect our songs from being stolen by someone who hears them at our house and, for example, records and posts them on Youtube without our knowledge or consent? Copywriting them, which we have done, only stakes our claim without any enforecement. Joining ASCAP seems to help only established performers.

Protecting A Song
by: oldcrow88

Your songs need to be fixed within a tangible medium, by the letter of the law under Article1 of the current U.S. Copyright Act. Copyright exists as soon as this fixation occurs and requires no special permission. So simply date the files either recorded digitally, analog or by simply writing out the composure. Should you require protection de facto, depending on exactly how you were copied, you will be made whole for any monetary loss proven on your part or the proven gain of the respondent.

We wait til we have about twenty great songs then we go to the Library of Congress Copyright site and pay $40 or so to copywrite an "album" of songs. It just means that you have several songs you want to copywrite and it's the cheapest way to do it instead of one at a time.
