Music and The Art of Zen - Part Two

by Steven Joe
(StudioGreen, Luray, VA)

Music and the Art of Zen Part 2:
The first article I wrote introduced Zen philosophy and how it pertains to song writing.

Whether you have joined forces with another or going alone, you should begin PURE.
Once you have emptied your cup you are ready to embark on your next song.

One way to do this is to copy that which is already successful.

A wise man told me if you want to be successful (in what you do), surround yourself with the successful and observe.

This includes everything from Industry networking to listening to Top 40.
I could write a book on this one principal alone.

Study all music that is considered to be popular, and distinguish what it is that makes it so. With this comprehension, you will discover the formulas that many of today?s top music writers have known for years.
This lesson may seem vague, but music to each of us is very subjective and personal. You need to make the choice on what music to study and how to use it.

The next article will explore the writing process.
