Melody First :))))

by SNAUX
(Chicago,IL)

Singer/Songwriter............

Singer/Songwriter............

Okay, I know most people have a book with lyrics/songs and force their already written lyrics into an already made song, which ends up being forced and not a natural sound. I find it best to start from scratch. If you hear an already made melody and want to sing on it write from scratch. If your writing a new song and have a melody in your head.........go into the studio and play that song from scratch.

I always write first and then I go into the studio and make the song fit my lyrics because I already know where I am going with the song.....the melody is already in my head. Also, I write for many genres of music. Knowing which genre your writing for is a HUGE factor.

There is so much that goes into writing. Most importantly write what YOU think people want to hear. Love, heartache (overcoming it), etc...... Make sure the "hook" is CATCHY and the verses tie into the hook. Make the hook memorable because that's what people want to chant. If you or those who listen to your song cannot remember the hook and have trouble singing it....then chances are you need to revamp that hook. Don't forget the bridge....... another memorable part in the song.

MUSIC+LYRIC= A MARRIAGE................

Melody first, second or last! NEW
by: MD

Any method of writing can be "forced" as you describe. I find that creating songs in a different order not only produces interesting results but also strengthen my over all songwriting. Sometimes I start with the chord progression then the melody, the chorus then the verse or lyrics then the melody and vice versa. If you ever get stuck while writing you can go back and look at the song from many different angles. It opens doors and challenges you creatively!
