Sweeter than the whippoorwill
A happy little tune
Echos through the green hills
On summer afternoons
He plays it for the chickens
Plays it for the horse
He entertains his hound dog
Laying on the porch

But Matthew don’t dance
Matthew don’t sing
Matthew picks the banjo
Listen to it ring

V2 Rollin’ like an engine
Smokin' fire and steel
Rhythm like tractor
Plowin' in the field
He plays it for the farmer
Busy at work
Plays it for the sweet corn
Growin’ in the dirt

V3 Bare feet and overalls
At the close of day
He jams with the bullfrogs
Drummin’ on the lake
And sittin’ on a cypress stump
Mud between his toes
Matthew makes the catfish jump
To his old banjo
