lyrics for music not composed by you

I have been inspired to write lyrics for a solo-piano professional's music from listening to the CD without lyrics. I'm wondering what is protocol for submitting or using these lyrics with his music? Can I sing lyrics to his song say on u-tube with his CD playing piano? Recently, I met this musician after his concert and handed him the lyrics. His publicist took them out of my hands and said he cannot take them from you. Then said she could take them and give them to him.
