lyric then title

by mike
(QLD. australia)

From my own personal point of view, i think its best to write lyrics before you give it a title. if you start with a title first its like naming a child before you know their gender... to write a song just from a title can make your focus to narrow. its fine to have an idea as the basis of the song but don't rely on one or two words to dictate your direction for the song.

once the song is finished the title will almost stare you in the face... if you want to write something truly magical then you need to roll with your thoughts freely, and not be limited by a title. As i said that is just my own experiences and it works for me, but just thought id share.

Song titles not in the lyrics
by: Anonymous

I agree with what you said but another thing you have to think about is that some songs don't even mention the title in the song
NIB~Black Sabbath
Paranoid~Black Sabbath
Baba O Reilly~The Who
Hypnotize~System of a Down
Just for a few examples

Lyrics are everything!
by: Maria

I agree with you! .... the lyrics are the main thing and once you got those, the title can be made by just picking out a certain word or phrase which is based on the overall meaning of the song!

It doesn't nessesarily have to be a word or phrase that is mentioned in the song, but i think its best to relate it to what the song is all about.

Either way works
by: Anonymous

There is no right or wrong way here. I used to write lyrics first and pick a title, but I have changed my approach to always try to start with a title.

Title first is a very common way to work for top professional songwriters.

For the majority of popular songs, the title is in the chorus which is the most important part of the song.

By starting with a Title/Chorus you get a better idea of what the song is about and have a clear direction. You can lead or build the song up to the chorus for example.

The Title is the Whole thing
by: Randall Parsley

I have been writing song lyrics since I was 12 years old. The title is the very beginning of your song. It is the introduction which you build your lyrics around. The title also tells you what the song is all about. If you have a title, the words will come more naturally. I've tried it both ways, with the title first and without a title. I have a two rule method: First the title, second, the lyrics. But to each his own.
