Look In The Mirror - Songwriting Critique - Rock Song

by Tyler Davis
(Eau Claire)

This song is about answering a single question: Are you really living your life as you want, or are you just following in someone elses footsteps, just being what they want you to be? I just want general feedback. Nothing too heartbreaking criticizing but just to see what others think of it:

Verse 1
The road ahead is so unclear
Your destination nowhere near
Journey through the world’s success
Perseverance put to test

Chorus
Locked in this cell, prisoner to my mind
Finding my way through this hell
I’m caught in this overwhelming bind

(background vocals)
Be yourself and finally see, don’t follow what others say you should be

I’m not you, never wanted to be
Break these chains and set me free
Following another down the road of hate
Look in the mirror before it’s too late

Verse 2
Hatred, greed, lust and sin
Set confusion for the world we’re in
You see an image but is it you?
Is it of them or actually true?

Chorus
Locked in this cell, prisoner to my mind
Finding my way through this hell
I’m caught in this overwhelming bind

(bacground vocals)
Be yourself and finally see, don’t follow what others say you should be

I’m not you, never wanted to be
Break these chains and set me free
Following another down the road of hate
Look in the mirror before it’s too late

Verse 3
Emotions on high, not sure where I belong
What role am I or where am I strong
Based my life on a single cause,
Is this what I truly want or for an applause?

Ending/Verse 4
Digging deeper in my thoughts I see
I was living to impress others, not to be me
Everything I had done, to them a mistake
I couldn’t believe I had been so fake

(I saw the light I’m finally me, not just living for what you want me to be…)

By Far The Greatest Song
by: Joseph Reed

The song is very outstanding and authentic, and forced me down memory lane to my peer pressure days.I was once a follower(and still strive to follow Christ)but now realize the importance of been myself, irrespective of what one thinks of me.Good song dude.

Honesty
by: Damien

Very Deep and honest lyric writing but not too personal as to alienate the reader/listener.
