I can hear you calling Country Lyrics Critique

by Charlie Mitchell
(alabama)

I wrote this after working with a client who had failed recovery three times. The lyric speaks to the relationship an addict has with their drug..

I can hear you calling
(The Relapse
Song)
By Charlie Mitchell

You took me far away/ from the man I use to be/
The more I held on to you/ the more you’d hold on to me/
You always did what you promised/You never told me a lie/
But if I stay here with you/ I know /
I’m going to die/

Oh, I can hear you calling/
So softly in the night/
Tempting me to do /what I know isn’t right/
you say you are the answer/ to all the pain in my life/
Oh, I can hear you calling/
Softly in the night/

When I’d look to you,/ you didn’t even have to speak/
You always seemed so strong/ and you knew when I was weak/
But now I’ve made a choice,/ now, I don’t need you anymore/
and I’m not giving in this time/
Like all those times/
Before/

Oh, I can hear you calling/
So, softly in the night/
Tempting me to do /what I know isn’t right/
You say you are the answer/ to all the pain in my life/
Oh, I can hear you calling/
Softly in the night/

I have found what has been missing/ what I was looking for/
I still hear you calling/ I just don’t listen anymore/
you are just a bad dream/
One I have had before/
Yeah, I still hear you calling/
But, I don’t listen/
Anymore/

Excess verbage
by: David

Your lyric has some literary merit, however, as a reader without music to enhance the flow, my tongue stumbled on a few of the lines. With songwriting as in poetry editing is key to the end result. Good luck and keep writing - happy trails.

Liked the rhymes

I like the lyrics. The first thing that I noticed is your rhyming. The words rhyme very naturally and did not sound forced. It's a good story.

Dramatic Climax
by: Anonymous

I like the honesty and uncontrived nature of the story. I like the natural rhyme. However, the story left me wanting either an ironic twist at the end or a stronger conclusion. The story is just a bit flat and predictable. Especially in country, I would expect a surprising turn--hinted at in the final verse and maybe a turn on words in the final chorus (missing in your version). Keep me hanging.
