How Rusty Gill writes his songs

by Rusty Gill
(Sioux City, Iowa)

Been Awhile

Been Awhile

This is a really great opportunity to share this info with younger songwriters(Once I was you). I can only say that I can not predict when a song is going to complete itself in my head. Usually I have some phrase that I've heard dancing in my brain and one day it all just seems to click. I never throw anything away as it might crop up years later. Never rely on what friends might think of your songs because they are tainted by the media. It's OK to listen to songs of today as long as you don't steal someone's tune. Remember one thing: If you believe in what you write; others will be believe it to. Good luck. Zeno54

Great songwriting tips.

Rusty,

I agree with what you said about not relying totally on what your friends think. Sometimes you've got to just believe in yourself and write.

I believe in what i am writing and it comes straight from my heart and how i feel. I just don't know how to but music to my words. Do you have any suggestions for me?

I agree :)

I can totally relate to the 'never chuck stuff out in may come in handy later'

I was strolling through a few of my notebooks which were stored in my attic and I found lyrics from several years ago and they related to a song i was writing and i was able to use them to complete the song and they opened new ideas for me.

Even though back then i thought the lyrics were pretty rubbish, but when used within the contents of the current song i was writing, They made sense :)
