How Gemma Scott Writes Her Songs

by Gemma Scott
(Herts. England)

Most of my songs are about people I know, emotions or things that have happened to me in the past. A lot of them are also about controversial issues, I like my songs to make a point. Inspiration tends to come out of the blue and just hits me. I always take a notebook with me wherever I go I jot down the idea, sometimes it is a theme and sometimes it is a sentence I want to use in a verse.
I sit down in a quiet place and write the lyrics, I fid it useful to have a rhyming dictionary with me just incase. When the lyrics are finished I always leave them for a day or two before going back to them because I often find I do not like them so much the next day and they need editing. Then I sit down at my keyboard and muck around until I find something that I like. I always ask friends to give feedback on songs because so often they have ideas that I have never even thought of. Hope this has been helpful. Good Luck.
