Great songwriting website. The power of contrast.

by Mark Joseph
(Brooklyn, New York)

I like your songwriting tips and enjoyed reading about your personal experiences with writing songs. I have found this entire site very helpful. Thanks for your efforts. I have added your site to my favorites list.

Even though I have been writing songs for a while now, I always find it very rewarding to read about the craft, even it means going back to the basics. You never know it all.

Your site is a great asset and must be especially helpful to aspiring songwriters.

If I may add, one technique that has worked a lot for me when it comes to writing songs is contrast. For instance, one can use -

1. minor chords in the verses and major chords in the chorus or vice versa

2. lower notes in the verses and a higher range in the chorus

3. longer notes in the verses and shorter (hence faster) notes in the choruses

This is just one of several songwriting techniques that I have found really useful over the years.

God bless.

Yes, I agree with you. Contrast makes a song interesting, but its also possible to create some contrast into the lyrics itself as well.

Too much contrast
by: Rob Boucher

contract is a balancing act though. The ear can only take so much so enough contrast to get your attention is good. Too much, and then you go into avante-guard jazz. Nothing wrong with them, but there is a reason why it's not as popular.

I've always thought that this is why rap chords are so simple in general. It's so complex rhymically that the ear can't take too many chord changes.

This tends to hold true with many things in design including fashion and design as well (the number of typefonts on a page for example).
