Don't try and force yourself to write songs.

I find that when you think, "Okay, today I'm going to sit down and write a song," it usually doesn't work or it may not come out to be the best song. Usually, you will be inspired by an experience you've had or just how you are feeling. Let the music come to you. The melody will come into your head, or maybe you'll think of a really good lyric idea. It usually happens when you least expect it to. Just relax and live your life, then you'll sing about it when your heart and mind are open to creativity and expression.

Inspiration and Perspiration
by: Cosie

Although the creative process resulting in complete songs sometimes happen spontaneously. However, for the most part it's a job. There are on rare occassions when some artists will tell a story about how they completed a song in a short amount of time.(James Taylors "Sweet Baby James", was written during a plane flight.) I am not positive, but I believe Stings "Every Breath You Take" took him 10 minutes. I've heard other stories where complete songs just popped into their head, under divine intervention. I am by NO MEANS saying that pieces of songs can't be generated spontaneously. Every songwriter, heck, every person has melodys and words pop into their heads throughout the day. It's just that writers are more attuned to them. The subconcious is VERY POWERFUL. Paul Simon was being interviewed by David Letterman awhile ago, and a question came up about how his songs are written. Simon replied.."it's a business"..I get up in the morning sit at my desk and start writing. When a team of contracted songwriters are sitting at a round table at a record company, their on the clock, and expected to produce songs. Inspiration may jump start the process, similiar to the spark that starts a car, but perspiration is the engine that continuously runs until you reach your destination. So, for the most part, this beautiful ability that we have to be able to create songs is 1% inspiration, 99% perspiration. Now, grab a towel and start sweatin'.
