Demo submission guidelines.
A guide to demo submission for songwriters and musicians.
It is important to have relevant information on submitting demos to record labels. Everyday, people keep repeating the same mistakes and it brings the same disappointing results; no record deal and their music finds its way to the trash.
Some of the biggest mistakes that musicians make where demo submission is concerned include:
Unsolicited submissions: submitting demos when labels have not requested them.
Submitting demos that have no contact information such as name, address, telephone number, email address and so on.
Music is not original or songs lack uniqueness.
Submitting music that was poorly recorded and therefore lacks quality.
The wrong music is submitted to the wrong labels; eg. submitting a country demo to a hip hop record label.
Music reveals incompetence at playing musical instruments or sounds rushed.
Musicians submit tapes which are not cued up.
Always make sure that your demos and CDs are packaged properly. This projects a professional image. Your song may be the perfect song. But if it is not packaged properly, no one will listen to it.
The songwriting process is just the first step to success. Perhaps you put a great deal of effort into it and perfected your song as fully as you could. Now is the time for your song to be a hit. My advice is to learn all you can about submitting demos so that your song can be heard.
