Begin with the title (songwriting)

by Max
(S.)

When you start writing a song, you always should keep the title in mind, so you don't make a song that doesn't fit to it. A title should be short, interesting and memorable. You can make a easy title, like just one word, or a title with rhetoric, like a alliteration or a rhyme... just make a title that stays in mind and that make people want to listen to you. Your title is the invitation card to your song, so make a nice one...

titles are a bit like names of people...

if the most beautiful woman in the world
walked in and you turned to someone
and said, "Who is she?"

And the reply came back, "Agnes Doodlehoffer",
you might say, "Agness.....hmmmm, yeah!"

But if a not so attractive woman was pointed
out to you and you were told her name was
Agnes, it might sound dorky.

A strong enough song could be called Regurgitated
Vomit and it would still be a great song.

Bob Dylan had some fun with song titles.... 'Rainy Day Women #12 & 35'...the purposely misnamed song still climbed the charts.

Personally I have fun with titles. I have a song called 'Taste the Rain'. When I registered it with Socan (Canadian Song Registrar and Royalties Collector and Distributor) the subtitle was something like:

Rise from your chains clerical workers at socan!

The drones who work there sometimes register the subtitle and not the title so it gets messy.

And another point. Sometimes a title is a working title until you know more about a song. I had a song called 'I'm Never Lonely'. Once it was fully developed, it was 'Lonesome Baby Blue'.

I'm not sure which is better, but the bottom line is you can call 'em whatever you want.
