Don Mclean wrote the song on yhe spot while drunk on his arse. If the song wasn't recorded at the time it would have been lost. Damn recorder.

Bye Bye Miss American Pie by: Michael Holland Shepard
Michael Holland Shepard is the songwriter, music and lyrics. It is a tribute song to Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, Big Bopper and the pilot (ghostrider in the sky). It was soon after I songwrote Puff The Magic Dragon at 12. The song Rye Whisky came from American Pie. A friend Michael Martin Murphy sang it.
