A Good song starts from scratch!

by Jordan
(Florida)

Here's what I do. If you're sitting down at home and messing around with the guitar or the piano or whatever you play(I play bass), lets say you come up with a good riff. Nothing else, just a simple little tidbit of music. Don't hesitate to write it down! You never know when it can help you out. You never know when the next part of the song will just hit you in the face!
Keep all the little riffs, no matter what.
You never know when it'll come in handy. You could be missing that one little piece of the puzzle in your newest song.
So in a nutshell, WRITE OUT EVERYTHING!

Help

I don't play any instruments, and I can't sing at all, if I did, birds would probably fall from nests. How do I come up with the music, if I already have lyrics?

To the one who needs help...

So you have the lyrics, but not the music. And your completely musically challenged! heh, maybe not completely. =)
Not a problem, especially if your not afraid to pick up an instrument and learn it. I started playing the bass wen i was 16 and i thought i would never learn. but i really just put my mind to it and had it down in a couple of months.
If that doesn't seem to work, give the lyrics to a friend you know who's in a band.
If you end up doing that, give that friend a general idea of how you want the words to sound and flow. My friend marissa writes poetry and she asked if my band could put some music to it. We did and gave her the credit she deserved.
And hey, if all else fails, you could always leave the words as poetry. It's a beautiful art. I've had words that i just couldn't put music to, and i left it as poetry in a blog on myspace. and so many people were just inspired by it.
All in all, just dont be afriad to do whatever you want to with your work. You never know who you can speak to. =)

To the wedding guy!

Believe it or not, I've been in the same situation. I had some one write the lyrics for me first, and then I wrote the music to the words. It made life a lot easier! =P
Just don't stress about it man.
And one more thing to keep in mind...
Music doesn't NEED to have words for it to truly speak.
=)
