Songwriting Breakthrough!, Issue #005 - Write better songs and save money with recording software. May 19, 2006 |
| Hello, Write better songs and save money with recording software.
Mantius Cazaubon
As songwriters, we spend lots of time writing our songs, i.e. writing lyrics and melody. But how many of us take it further and actually add music to our songs? Are we too dependent on others to do what many of us can do ourselves? Are we wasting money? Today, I'd like to talk about the importance of getting acquainted with using recording studio software and setting up your own home recording studio. And I'm not even talking about building something professional as yet. I'm simply referring to installing some software on your computer. Software that can help you write better songs and save money. If you know how to play an instrument, particularly a keyboard, don't underestimate the importance of doing your own sequencing on your computer, via MIDI. At least, it's a good start. The recording process will be so much cheaper if you already have a basic arrangement that you can take to a more professional recording studio. Personally, I've been doing a lot of sequencing on my Roland XP80 keyboard but I found that it was very limiting. Because of the limited polyphony, some notes do not play, and there is a lot of lagging when a sequence plays. So what was the answer to my problem? Simple. I'm now using Cubase SX on my PC. The software is very easy to use and a lot of fun. One thing I like about having my own recording setup is the fact that I can listen to my music over and over again and make changes as I see fit, easily. Whether it is my phrasing, or a bass line I want to change, or whatever. I'm happy to report that I am saving a lot of money in the process. Only this week I took one of my Cubase arrangements to a studio where I have recorded a few of my songs. Needless to say, I was surprised when the studio quoted a figure which was half of what I would normally pay. Only because I had done a lot of the work myself. You do not have to be an expert producer to invest in some recording software. It has worked wonders for me and I hope it can do the same for you. I have written an entire section on building your own recording studio. I urge you to Click here to check it out:
