Songwriting Breakthrough!, Issue #004 - Using the Internet as an effective marketing tool. March 20, 2006 |
| Hello, Music promotion: using the Internet as an effective marketing tool.
Mantius Cazaubon
No matter how good you are as a songwriter, it's not enough if you alone know about your talent. So get the word out there. There are many ways to go about doing that, but in this issue I'd like to talk about one very effective way of introducing your music to the world. I'm talking about the Internet. Using the Internet, you can promote your songs and music around the world without spending a lot of money. What is the best way to get your music on the net? It's by creating your own site. You can go to the library and find a good book on how to build a website. Or simply do a search in google on "create a website" and you'll find countless how-to guides. The best tool I've come across on building a site that gets lots of traffic is called Site Build It! To attract visitors to your site you must have content. If you write country music for example, you will need pages with information on country music. That way, you can be found in a search engine like google, when someone does a search on something related to country. If you're a saxophone player who writes instrumental music, you want your pages to come up in the results when someone does a search using a term like "saxophone instrumental". Another way of attracting visitors is by persuading other webmasters to link to your website. Just send them an email requesting a link. They usually require you to link back to them from your site. Now that your website is up you can simply make your music downloadable to your visitor's computer. Alternatively, if you do not want your music to be downloaded you can allow audio streaming from your site. That way visitors can listen to your music in real time without waiting for the entire track to download. You can offer your music for sale from your site or link to sites that offer that service. But if you're not ready to create your own website, you can simply place information about yourself on someone else's. There are numerous music sites that would be interested in featuring you on their site. Sometimes you have to pay a small fee. Usually, you simply have to send them an email with your information and attached pictures and they do all the work. Another method of getting your music heard is joining a newsgroup. With this method you do not need a site. As long as you have an Internet connection and an email account, you're good to go. You can do your networking from there. But really, nothing beats creating your own website. If you're thinking of promoting your music on the net via your very own website, I highly recommend Site Build It! to you. Recommended Resources: The Guerilla Music Marketing Handbook is one of the best works I've come across on music promotion. If you want your music to make money, this handbook is a must.
