Guide to Successful Lyric Writing

In this issue we focus on lyric writing. The following are a few suggestions you may like to consider when writing lyrics. These ideas have worked for me in the past.

1. You can write lyrics based on your own personal experiences or on incidents which happened that you think may have some song value. In my experience it has been easier to write about my own experiences. I am able to approach such lyrics with a higher degree of confidence.

2. But never limit yourself to writing about your own experiences. To add variety to your songs why not write about stuff that you didn't personally experience? How about writing about something experienced by a close friend or someone you know?

3. In the past, I have gotten interesting lyric ideas by reading newspapers and magazines, as well as from my favorite movies. Ideas cannot be copyrighted since it’s very possible for more than one person to come up with the same idea independently of each other. Only the actual manifestations of ideas (such as a song) can be copyrighted. So it’s perfectly okay to use someone’s idea or even a song title.

4. Usually, when we have a concept for a song what do most of us do? We simply write ONE song based on that idea. If it is a very good concept, my suggestion is to write several songs based on that concept. Simply add a different angle or perspective for each song you write. This can add up to a complete concept album.

5. Have you written a song where you think the melody is brilliant but the lyrics just don’t meet the mark? Most people simply discard the song. Big mistake! Instead of trashing the entire song, you can keep the melody and write new lyrics based on a new theme.
